Cursor Background Agents are asynchronous remote agents. Cursor's documentation says they work in isolated machines, can access the internet, install packages, run terminal commands automatically, and make repository changes. That is powerful, but it also means the handoff surface is larger than a normal foreground chat.

Radar read: treat a completed background-agent run like a remote contractor handoff. Inspect changed files, terminal history, generated artifacts, and security assumptions before continuing.

Why this matters.

Background agents are useful because they keep moving without waiting for each terminal command approval. The same property creates recovery risk. If the agent ran a failing test loop, installed a package, followed a bad instruction, or spent through a long context, the next decision should start from evidence, not from the agent's final summary alone.

Cursor also prices Background Agents against API usage and asks users to set spend limits. Long remote tasks can therefore become both a context problem and a cost-control problem.

Before you merge or retry.

  1. Capture the diff. List every changed file and generated artifact before continuing the thread.
  2. Keep terminal evidence. Preserve commands, exit codes, logs, and test output.
  3. Review network-sensitive steps. Background agents can access the internet; note any package installs, downloads, or external calls.
  4. Check spend and model choice. Long Max Mode or background runs can consume usage faster than expected.
  5. Write the next smallest action. Do not ask the next tool to "continue"; tell it the exact verification step.

What ShardStitch does here.

ShardStitch turns the background-agent result into a local, trust-labeled continuation packet: changed files, verified checks, failed commands, inferred claims, risk notes, and next action. Then you can keep using Cursor, ask another tool to review, or move the task to Claude, Codex, Roo Code (archived May 2026), or Gemini without rebuilding the state manually.
